What is TASTE?

TASTEtheIsland is an online Directory for Vancouver Island; a resource for shoppers to FIND local businesses, products and services AND a unique way for local businesses and events to get their business FOUND online. TASTE is more than just a Directory, we actually promote the businesses that are listed on our directories.

Why is it called TASTE if it's not just for FOOD?

We called it TASTE because we are all about "tasting" and experiencing the businesses and events on Vancouver Island, which incorporates tasting fine food (and wines) of course, but TASTE also offers a sampling of the many unique businesses, events, activities and opportunities that take place in the regions of Vancouver Island. We pride ourselves in being "the good taste business directory" and believe shopping local is just good TASTE!

Finding Your Way Around

How do I find Vancouver Island Businesses?

Business listings can be found under each of the 10 categories on DIRECTORY pages.
Or... visit the Region's Directory page and search by category.
Or... search the site using our site Search Engine located at the top of every Region page.

Where do I find Community resources?

Events are posted on the TASTEvents Board.
Community Resource Links are listed on the AREA pages - Click on the widget map to access the different areas within the specified Region.

Can I shop by Area?

The TASTE Directories are organized according to categories, so that you can see the choices throughout the entire Region.

How do I get my business listed on the TASTE Directory?

Visit the region you want to list your business in and visit the JOIN US or PRICING page to find out more.

TASTEtheIsland offers several options for businesses to list on our 6 regional TASTE Directories. TASTE promotes locally-operated businesses within specified Regions only. For more information, visit the JOIN US or PRICING page in the region you want to list your business in (eg TASTENanaimo, TASTECowichan).

How does TASTE promote local businesses?
We promote paid Directory listings in several ways: on our homepage slideshow, through email marketing, social media (Facebook and Twitter), our weekly contests, and the TASTE Blog.

Submitting an Event

How do I get my Event up on the TASTEvent Board?

The TASTEvent Boards are localized to each Island region. To submit an event, first choose your Island region, then go to the ADD EVENT page and fill out the form.

What is the criteria for submitting an event?

Submit events in the region where the event is taking place. Event Board Rules are posted on the ADD EVENT page.

I have made an error on my form what should I do?

Contact Support immediately and give complete details as to what needs to be changed.
DO NOT attempt to re-submit your event.

I have 2 of the same events with different dates but trying to list the second one gives me an error

The "system" is semi-automated and will not allow duplicate event titles, renaming the title will allow you to list.

How do I get my images included in my event?

Only paid Directory listings are eligible to include images with events. If you would like your image included, consider listing your business or organization on the TASTE Directory.

If you have a paid Directory listing and would like an image included with your event, email your image to Patricia.

Having Trouble With Forms

What size are the images requirements?

All images are required to be 72dpi, either .jpg, .jpeg or .png format and less than 100K each in file size.
The logo dimensions are 190w.
Gallery images are 300w x 300h.
PDF files are to be less than 1Mb in file size.

How do I resize my images BEFORE uploading them?

If you don't have an image editor installed on your computer, you can use our Image Crop/resizer. If you are still stuck, we also offer this service for a nominal fee. Contact our image editor.

Why do I get error messages when filling out the form?

  1. There are required fields, if you have javascript turned on and you miss one of these the field will highlight and the form will not submit.
    If javascript is turned off, the form will not have a submit button and will not work.
  2. There are filters to help prevent "spamming robots" from sending garbage. If you have used words that are in the checklist or filled out a field inappropriately you will get an error display.
  3. However, the usual cause is wrong image/pdf file size or file type.
    This is why we ask you to read the requirements prior to filling out a form so that you are not wasting your own time.

How do I get help with my listings?

Contact us by email or phone 250-597-2999 and we would be happy to answer any questions you have or assist you with any problems you may be having.

How long does it take to get my listing on the Directory?

Once your payment clears, Basic listings may take up to 72 hours, Profile listings may take up to 7 days to set up.

Can I update my listing myself?

Our customer service representatives do the updates for Basic listings. Profile listings are able to update their listing once a month, via our easy to use updater.

I am having trouble with the form, what do I do?

Contact our technical support if you are having problems uploading or using our listing forms.

About Profile Listings

How do I Profile my Vancouver Island business?

Visit the PROFILE page in your specific Region. Visit our PRICING page for information about prices and what a Profile listing includes.

How long does it take for my Profile Listing to appear in google searches?

It can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks for the robots to organically search and find your listing page. There is nothing we can do to influence how quickly the search engines find your listing - it is best to allow them to organically search and find your page on their own.

What can I do to make my page have better rankings with Google?

One very important thing you can do is remember to use your industry keywords in the text of your profile page as often as possible: in your company description, events and specials, names of your images, .pdfs etc. The more "rich content" you have pertaining to your industry, the easier it will be, not only for us to build better SEO for your page, but also the more likely your page will get ranked well with the search engines.

How often can I update my Profile?

Profile members get to update their page once per month. We require your information by the 20th of the month prior to the month you want it to be viewed. If you want another update during the month, there will be a minimum fee for each additional change.

Can I pay by the month?

No, not at the moment. If you would like to discuss other payments options, please Contact us.


You will be sent a renewal invoice one month before your listing expires. If your payment lags 7 days past the expiry day of your listing, your listing will automatically be deleted. To re-install your page, there is a re-installation fee of $75 that must be paid before the Profile page can be installed again.

Can I pay by cheque?

Yes, you can. If you prefer to pay by cheque, submit your Profile form first then contact us and we will send you an invoice and an address you can send your payment to. We also accept electronic transfers.

Can I cancel my listing at any time?

Yes, you can. Please allow 48 hours for us to remove your listing.

Will I get a refund?

We do not issue refunds, although we do keep record of your payments for credit should you decide to come back or re-list under a different business name at a future date.
